The genre of your writing is the kind of writing your document is. The genre of your writing has the most effect on how you write because of the various conventions that different genres have. The genres for Writing for Engineering are different from the genres typically explored in other literature courses. Instead of fiction and poetry, our class explored technical genres, such as engineering proposals and job postings. This changed my definition of genre and what constitutes a genre, because previously, I have thought of genre as something more fluid and open to personal interpretation. A novel can have two genres, and the genre of a novel can differ from person to person, but it is difficult for a job posting to have the genre of both a job posting and a lab report. The same could be said for most genres of technical writing. To understand the genre of our assignments better, the class was required to fill out genre analyses sheets. The genre analyses sheets would have us consider how the rest of the elements of rhetorical situation change depending on our genre. For example, the genre of a technical description typically has the purpose of informing and a neutral stance on the topic, while a memo typically has the purpose of persuading and is in support of its topic.
