CLO #5

Engage in genre analysis and multimodal composing to explore effective writing across disciplinary contexts and beyond.

Throughout this course, the class was required to complete genre analyses and post them in discussion boards for commentary. These analyses helped us understand our assignment and the conventions we should keep in mind in our writing. Our understanding of the different conventions of the genre we would write in made our writing stronger and made it easier to tweak those conventions so that the style of the writing didn’t break any genre conventions, but was unique in a way that couldn’t be replicated. In addition, repeatedly doing these genre analyses changed the way we think about genre, and had us breaking down genre into individual conventions as if it were second nature. The course also made us understand and use multimodal composing in our writing. For example, in our technical descriptions, we were required to use images and provide description of our product. The images are a visual mode of composition, helping the audience understand what the product looked like, and the descriptions of said product are a linguistic mode of composition, furthering the audience’s understanding of the product by describing it in digestible text. These modes of composition helped the audience understand how the product works, what it is made of, and how the parts of the product are arranged to make it work.
