Audience

The audience of a document is who is supposed to read the document. Throughout Writing for Engineering, my group and I have had to write for varying audiences, which would change how we write and what we should cater to. For example, in my lab report, we had to consider the different audiences that were intended to read our lab report and how they will use it. Two examples of possible audiences for a lab report are students and researchers. A student may want to read more in-depth on the different sections to pick out information they need, while a researcher may only be interested in how we conducted our experiment. Thus, in consideration of that, we had to write in topics and make sure each section stayed relevant to its topic as opposed to other literature that prioritize a continuous flow. There were also many different factors of audience that we had to take into consideration. To understand our target audience better, we filled out audience analysis sheets that listed out details on our potential audiences. These sheets had us fill out info such as political affiliations and experience in their field, so that we could cater to them in our writing.
