“Negotiate your own writing goals and audience expectations regarding conventions of genre, medium, and rhetorical situation.”
As opposed to the second Course Learning Outcome, where in order to meet it I needed to find a balance of writing goals between me and my groupmates, to meet this learning outcome I need to find a balance between my writing goals and the audience’s writing goals. As important as nuance and style is, technical writing is meant to be direct and digestible. A writer may wish to personalize their document with their own style of writing, but they must be careful to make sure they do so in a way that does not make the document hard to understand. The audiences for technical writing are a lot more varied that literary writing, so it is important to cater the rhetoric situation of your document towards your target audience as much as you can. Achieving this will make the purpose of your document stronger, and make your document more useful.
